Artist Statement

As Suyi Liu deeply believes art is originated from history and inspirations are originated from life, she find herself continually returning to the aspects that are often ignored or avoided by the crowds. Taking a critical view of history, gender, and cultural issues, she creates various art work including paintings, photography, installations, films, and performance art. In her creative practice, she engages with subjects as various as cultural mythologies, historical records, and modernist social issues, and reproduces the visual representations arranging them into new conceptually layered work. Her work as the immersive experience invites the audiences to her journey of life and leads them to the spiritual world.

In the year of 2020, Suyi returned back to China, and started to explore Chinese art. She decides to explore more about her identity as a Chinese as well as her art with ancient Chinese culture.  She is inspired by many excellent ancient Chinese art works and historical traces,  representing the visual languages in contemporary medium such as fashion photography. Her current projects continue the concept, using the traditional materials such as porcelain and ink to explore the space in between clothing and sculptures.
